The site was bought from Galway Corporation at £648 per acre. Designed soon after Vatican II by Patrick Sheahan & Partners of Limerick, the church has a hexagonal plan centred on the altar so that all 1,100 worshippers face it equally. Built by John Sisk & Son at a cost of £190,000, it was dedicated on 8 August 1968 by Bishop Michael Browne. The altar, ambo and lamp stand are of green Peruvian onyx; mosaics in the shrines are Florentine, and the cross above the altar reproduces St Clare’s Cross at Assisi, painted by Giorgio Favella. Stained glass is by Phyllis Burke of Dublin.
