The church was built in 1861 by Rev J. Gleeson, who served as parish priest from 1854 to 1867. The site was given by Lord Inchiquin’s estate. In 1943–44, the church was repaired and remodelled by architect W. H. Byrne of Dublin. The sanctuary was moved to the west end, a new limestone altar was installed, and a new sacristy was added. The work cost £3,000.
