Statement from the Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora on the Conclusion of the Trial Relating to the Plot Against the Myriam Mosque, Galway

The conclusion of the trial of those involved in a plot to cause death and destruction at the Myriam Mosque, Galway offers us a collective opportunity to reflect on the right of all to religious freedom, free from the threat of violence. The intentional targeting of any person on the basis of their religion is a threat to us all. It is something about which we should all be rightly appalled and deeply concerned.

Bishop Michael reiterates the words of the message he sent to Imam Noonan after the news of this plot broke in November 2025 –

“I write to express my concern at the recent uncovering of threats against your Mosque and my solidarity with your community. It is deeply sad and disturbing that such would be the case. For me it emphasises a need for us all to work harder towards a greater understanding and good relation between all religions. Rest assured of my thoughts and prayers. May God bless us all.”
