Bishop Michael has invited the people of the Dioceses of Clonfert, Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora to remember the missionary work of the Church as we mark World Mission Sunday, 18 October 2026.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday, a day when Catholics throughout the world pray for missionaries and support their work, particularly among poorer communities.
Pope Leo XIV has chosen “One in Christ, united in mission” as this year’s theme, reminding us that every baptised person has a part to play in sharing the Gospel.
Bishop Michael encourages parishioners to remember missionaries in their prayers and to support the annual Mission Sunday collection.
We give thanks especially for the many Irish missionaries who have devoted their lives to serving others and continue to do so today.
Message of Pope Leo XIV for World Mission Sunday 2026
One in Christ, United in Mission
In his message for the 100th World Mission Sunday, Pope Leo XIV reminds the Church that our missionary calling begins with our unity in Jesus Christ.
The Holy Father encourages Catholics to grow in communion with one another and to recognise that every baptised person shares in the Church’s mission. He speaks of the importance of prayer, cooperation and reaching out to those who have yet to encounter the Gospel.
Pope Leo also expresses his gratitude to missionaries and to the many people who support their work through prayer and financial contributions.
His message is an invitation to every parish and community to rediscover the joy of sharing the Gospel and to remember that we are all called to take part in the mission entrusted to the Church.
