Joyful and prayerful scenes unfolded in the Cathedral this Sunday afternoon as the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion were celebrated, gathering catechumens and candidates from across the diocese with their sponsors, families and parish communities.
After the homily, the Bishop stepped forward before the altar and reminded the faithful that Easter is drawing near. He acknowledged those preparing to receive Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist at the Easter Vigil, as well as those already baptised who now seek to complete their initiation and be received fully into the Catholic Church. Sustained by God’s grace and upheld by the Christian community, they asked to take the next step toward the Easter mysteries.
At the Bishop’s invitation, the catechumens and candidates came forward with their sponsors as the organ sounded. Sponsors placed a hand upon the shoulder of those they accompany, offering public testimony that they have listened faithfully to the Word of God, shared in the Church’s prayer and sought to live according to the Gospel. When the Bishop asked the assembly if these men and women were ready, the response was strong and unanimous.
A particularly moving moment followed when Ryan, who was received into full communion at last year’s Easter Vigil, reverently brought forward the Book of the Elect. In silence and prayer, the catechumens inscribed their names, declaring before the Church their firm intention to be joined to Christ in the sacraments of initiation. The Bishop then declared them members of the Elect, to be initiated at the coming Easter Vigil, and they gave thanks to God.
Addressing the candidates, the Bishop spoke of the grace already given in Baptism and called them to a deeper conversion during the Lenten season. As they prepare to complete their initiation through Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist, they were urged to remain faithful to their baptismal covenant and to ready their hearts for the gifts to be bestowed at Easter.
Sponsors were encouraged to persevere in their sacred responsibility, sustaining both the Elect and the candidates through prayer, example and wise counsel in the weeks ahead.
