The church was built around 1839 on a site given by Daniel McNevin, solicitor to the Forster family. It was originally thatched and later slated in 1846. Fr M. Connolly installed a marble altar in 1885. The church was rebuilt in 1911 under Fr Andrew Nestor, with Professor William A. Scott as architect. He added marble columns and arches at the transepts. In 1979, the building was reordered to meet Vatican II requirements, with a new altar, porch, and seating. The work was designed by Colm Keogh.

A plaque records the building of the church in 1842, though foundations may date earlier. A donation from the O’Hara family of Raheen House helped begin construction. Fr Patrick Fallon, parish priest from 1828 to 1844, later became Bishop of Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora. The church was reroofed and enlarged in 1916 under Fr Martin Fahy. Professor Scott was architect, and the work cost £700. In 1964 Simon J. Kelly oversaw repairs, adding a porch, sacristy, and stained glass by George Walsh. A free-standing bell tower followed later. The carved oak altar is thought to have come from Italy. The church was badly flooded in 1995.

Lord Gort (John Prendergast Smyth) gave the site to Bishop Edmund French of Kilmacduagh. The architects were James and George Pain, who also designed the Church of Ireland church in Gort. The original cruciform church was built in 1825 by Fr Michael Duffy and dedicated in 1829 by Bishop French. In 1876 Fr Timothy Shannon added the chancel and sacristy. In 1892 Monsignor J. Fahy extended the nave, added a baptistry and tower, and completed a spire to designs by William Hague. The church was enlarged again in 1937–38 under Fr J. Cassidy and in 1956–59 under Fr Michael Fallon. Architect W. H. Byrne oversaw both later projects.
