The foundation stone was laid on 30 May 1858 by Bishop Fallon. The church was designed by M. B. Moran of Dublin in the Gothic style. It was badly damaged by storms in 1862 and 1863. Fr Francis Forde travelled to Australia and raised £2,000 to rebuild it. The new building was completed in 1866. The sanctuary was redecorated in marble and mosaic in 1938, and general repairs to the nave, roof, and tower took place in 1942. The roof was replaced again in 1985.
