George Ousley Higgins, M.P. for Mayo, purchased the Glencorrib estate in 1850 and began building the church in 1873. Before then, Mass had been celebrated in the old Franciscan church at Kilroe, abandoned by the friars in 1841. Higgins died in 1874, and his sister Margaret, a Sister of Charity in Cork, completed and paid for the church. It was dedicated on 8 May 1875 by Fr John Goode, parish priest. The church was extended and renovated in 1944 by Fr H. Feeney. A bell donated by John Harte of Mounthenry was installed in a new belfry in 1963.
