Fr John Forde began the church to replace a thatched chapel on the same site. It was roofed by 1839 but damaged during the “Big Wind” of 1839. Bishop Fallon dedicated it in May 1855. Around 1870 Fr Michael Nagle added the belfry and bell. Professor Scott directed major repairs in 1907. Between 1971 and 1973 Richard Hurley redesigned the interior in line with Vatican II, adding a new altar, ambo and tabernacle by Ray Carroll. The presbytery was replaced by a new sacristy and meeting hall in 1997 under Colm Ó Riain, architect.
