A memorial bench has been unveiled and blessed in Gort to honour the contribution of the Sisters of Mercy to the town and its surrounding communities.
For more than a century the Sisters served the people of Gort, especially through education and their outreach to those in need. Their presence brought opportunity, care, and encouragement to generations.
At the unveiling, Bishop Michael Duignan said it was fitting that their service be remembered.
“It is only right to remember and give thanks for the immense contribution of generations of the Sisters of Mercy to the town of Gort and its surroundings. For well over a century, their presence and ministry here was deeply felt in particular in the areas of education and outreach to those in need. Inspired by faith, they offered opportunity and solace to many. Our thanks to Father Marrinan and the Gort Cemetery Committee for offering us this opportunity to give thanks for their important contribution to Gort and its surroundings with the unveiling of this memorial bench.”
The bench now stands as a sign of gratitude for the long years of faithful service given by the Sisters of Mercy to the people of Gort.
