When the Christmas Story Filled the City

What a truly wonderful day of joy and festive cheer at the Cathedral as the annual Live Crib welcomed families, parishioners, schools, nursing homes residents and visitors from across the city. From morning until late afternoon, there was a real sense of warmth and celebration as the Christmas story was brought to life. Parish volunteers, real animals, and the beautiful singing of local school choirs combined to create an atmosphere that touched people of all ages. Many paused, returned again, or simply stood quietly, allowing the scene to speak to them in its own gentle way.

Speaking recently about the importance of the Nativity, Pope Leo XIV described the crib as “a gift of light for our world in need of hope,” reminding us that through the Nativity “we are never alone.” He called those who take part in such traditions to be “pilgrims of hope, bearers of consolation and inspiration for all those you meet.” These words were clearly reflected in the spirit of the day, as the Live Crib offered comfort and a moment of peace in the midst of busy lives.

Sincere thanks are extended to Galway City Council, Turoe Pet Farm, the Parish Pastoral Council under the leadership of Mrs Anne Berry, and to all who helped with refreshments, costumes, practical arrangements and organisation.
