Fr Peter Daly began the church in 1832 and completed it in 1838. It was consecrated by Bishop George Browne, the first bishop of Galway. The stone came from Menlo and was ferried across the Corrib. A tower was added in 1840 at the expense of Lady Ffrench, who was later buried in a vault behind the church. Repairs were carried out in 1930–31 under H. L. G. O’Connor and again in 1951. Fr Daly’s detailed accounts of the building survive and record the materials, wages, and tools used.
