This church was designed by M. B. Moran of Dublin in 1855. It was intended to have a tall tower and spire, but a dispute with a neighbouring landlord prevented their completion. The building, made from Galway limestone, was opened in September 1859. The organ, built by William Telford of Dublin, was installed in 1868, and a new high altar was erected in 1934. A major renovation in 1978–79 provided a new roof, floor, and stained glass by George Walshe. The work cost £178,000, and the church was rededicated by Bishop Eamonn Casey in April 1979.
