Construction began in 1841 under Fr Thomas Kelly, with generous help from the Blake French family of Cloughballymore. The church was cruciform in plan and built of local stone. In 1972, the roof was found to be badly affected by dry rot, and the building was largely reconstructed. Only the outer walls were retained. The work was designed by Brendan Jeffers and carried out by builder Patrick Scully. The old stained glass and Stations of the Cross were kept. Bishop Michael Browne rededicated the church on 2 September 1973.
