The site was given by Fr Michael Varilly, parish priest from 1831 to 1869. The church was built by Fr Martin McGurran, P.P. (1888–1919), with contractor Francis O’Donohue of Ennistymon. One workman was killed and another died during construction; the contractor also died before completion. The church was blessed by Bishop McCormack on 11 November 1894. Fr McGurran financed seating by auctioning pews to families, a system later abolished. It was renovated in 1950 and again in 1986 when the roof was retiled. A three-light stained-glass window by George Walsh was added in 1995.
